“Be the change you want to see in the world.” How rightly said by Mahatma Gandhi. If you wish to change the way the world is working, you have to take your first small step as a foundation to your vision. And this is called as Initiation. Yes, Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop is exactly doing the same thing. It’s a vision of a bunch of entrepreneurs, scholars, and other experts who has an urge to create a sustainable future for all of us. For this, they are putting forward their first step on 4th December, 2009.

We are either unaware or deliberately ignore the fact that chemical industry with more than 80,000 chemicals in commerce, impacts every aspect of human life in a non-negotiable manner. But how long can this fact be ignored? Someday or the other we all have to realize this and take the necessary step. IGCW aims to do that. As a first initiative, IGCW aims to take green chemistry from the cauldrons of the laboratory to the corridors of industry. It will involve from concepts to execution. This event will focus on green chemistry and engineering in chemistry intensive areas such as in fine chemicals which will include dyes and pharma, agrochemicals, colorants, personal care chemicals, etc. It will look at revisiting chemistries and see how at source changes are being incorporated for greening the processes. Topics that will be covered include catalysis, alternative reaction media, novel process engineering, process intensification, micro-reactions, etc. Other issues like regulatory mechanisms, R&D requirements, venture capital, and financial funding will also be highlighted.

The event is designed so meticulously that each day will expand and enlighten the vision of participants about industrial green chemistry. The first day of the event will just be an induction to the entire three day workshop. It will slowly ignite the participants further inspiring them and then pricking them to take initiatives to attain a sustainable future. The whos of the who would be the key drivers of the event. They will talk on various aspects of green chemistry citing examples of leading companies who have adopted benign technologies and also through their experiences.

Dr. Bob Peoples speech on the Importance of Green Chemistry for a Sustainable World, Dr. Mihir Chaudhari’s speech on Industry – Academia Partnership: Successful case study of Ranitidine Hydrochloride, and Dr. Brakaspathy speech on Initiatives to promote Green Chemistry will be the main three key speeches that will drive the participants to take up the initiative to attain a successful and sustainable future. And further more there would be more of such brainstorming sessions on the next two days which will enlighten the participants about benign technologies and other aspects of industrial green chemistry.

But don’t consider this as an end to the cause of a sustainable future…it is just a beginning! So are you ready to take initiative for a sustainable future for your children?

It’s a normal practice followed since ages – we always need somebody to inspire us to do something. And many great movements and events have become huge success just because some stalwarts inspired others to do what they were doing rightly.

Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop 2009 (IGCW) is one such unprecedented event which aims to take green chemistry from the cauldrons of the laboratory to the corridors of industry. The workshop aims to encourage pharma and chemical industries to deliver products and services in benign ways, untainted by toxic routes and environmental damage.

IGCW-2009 is principally designed on the basis of a 9-Eye (I) Approach; each ‘eye’ expanding the vision of participants for engaging them into emerging views of Industrial Green Chemistry paradigms. The three day workshop has been designed based on this 9-Eye. The first day aims to ignite, inspire, and encourage people to take initiation in the field of green chemistry. The target audience for the first day, i.e., 4th December, 2009, will be over 300 senior management members, directors, CEOs, consultants, entrepreneurs, strategic advisors, etc. They will be given an opportunity to recognize and explore the ecological and economical footprint of IGC through Ignition, Inspiration, and Initiation.

In order to ignite awareness about IGC among more than 1, 00,000 people connected to chemical industry as stake holder, stalwarts like Prof. Paul Anasthas and Dr. John Warner will share their knowledge and expertise on IGC. Once the audience are enlightened about the topic, Dr. Murli Sastry, Chief Scientist with Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre, will further inspire the audience by narrating the 100 years journey of sustainability at TATA Group. Furthermore, Dr. Apurva Bhattacharya will speak on success case studies of commercializing green chemistry and positively impacting economics and environment.

We are here to inspire you to make this world a better place to live. So are you ready to get inspired and support our initiative?

Many events are happening around the globe focusing on the pharmaceutical and chemical industry, viz, CPhI – Worldwide, CPhI India, Informex, etc. Subsequently, standing tall and steady can become difficult for a new comer like IGCW (Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop). But did you ever think how do we stand different from these high-end events of the industry? The answer is very simple – our Concept and our Way of Approach make IGCW different from other big events!

IGCW ’09 is the first global event which aims to take green chemistry from the cauldrons of the laboratory to the corridors of industry.

The event is segregated in three days and is primarily designed on the basis of a 9-Eye (I) Approach; each ‘eye’ expanding the vision of participants for engaging them into emerging views of Industrial Green Chemistry (IGC) paradigms. The 9-EYE of the workshop is Ignition, Inspiration, Initiation, Identification, Invention, Innovation, Industrialization, Implementation, and Impact.

Again the target audience for each day is different. Day one is for over 300 Senior Management, Directors, CEOs, Consultants, Entrepreneurs, Strategic Advisors, etc. to recognize and explore the ecological and economical footprint of Industrial Green Chemistry through Ignition, Inspiration, and Initiation. second day of the workshop, i.e. 5th December, 2009, aims at technical directors, R&D managers, chief scientists, CTOs, CXOs, etc, to identify the key industrial challenges, and view various paradigms emerging in the domain of IGC, further providing significant input for inventing and innovating its application through Identification, Invention, and Innovation. Finally, the third day, i.e. 6th December, 2009, will encompass specific requirements of industries for implementing IGC and thus elucidate ecological and economical impact concerning the process, production, project, operation managers, vice-presidents, etc.

On day one, the main aim of the workshop is to enlighten and ignite awareness about IGC among more than 1, 00,000 people connected to chemical industry as stakeholder. The whos who of the industry will commence the workshop enlightening the audience talking about various aspects of industrial green chemistry right from the concept to the principles to revisiting chemistries and helping understand the greening of the processes. For this, stalwarts like Prof. Paul Anasthas and Dr. John Warner will share their knowledge and expertise on IGC. Prof. Paul Anasthas will give a lecture on Sustainable Innovations through Green Chemistry and Dr. John Warner would share the 12 most important principles of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. Further, Dr. Murli Sastry, Chief Scientist with Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre, will further ignite the audience by narrating the 100 years journey of sustainability at TATA Group.

Once commenced, the consequent days will lead to further Eyes of the 9-Eye (I) Approach, which is linked just so perfectly that once out of the workshop, the addressees would be fully enlightened about industrial green chemistry. So will you be with us to know more about the next Eyes of the event?

The term industrial green chemistry was unknown to many of us hitherto. Green chemistry always had its valuable place in the laboratories. But as Dr. Ray Anderson opines, it got its dose at the manufacturing facilities “when people or customers started questioning the companies on what environment friendly measures are they taking?” Companies didn’t have answers to this question initially. But now companies are taking slow but conscious effort to set up facilities that is sustainable in the future.

Thus, it is high time that this small but conscious and kind initiatives of companies gets its due notice in the world. Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW – 2009), in order to encourage such companies and to provide them a platform to expose their initiatives, is all set to felicitate them for their benign initiatives which would help make this earth a better place to live. The award nominations has been divided into four categories, i.e., MNC / Large IGCW Awards, Medium / Small IGCW Awards, Academic / Scientist IGCW Awards, and Students IGCW Awards.

The aim of this workshop is to enlighten, encourage, and expose the impact of green chemistry and green engineering technologies at an industrial scale and allow altering realities on the ground. Industries, researchers and scientists, academia world-wide, committed to implement Green Chemistry based solutions are welcome to present an abstract for Industrial Green Chemistry Award recognition on topics pertinent to the IGCW themes.

So what are you waiting for? Get your Green Chemistry contribution recognized, apply for IGCW Award Nomination!

Due to a surge in the number of people becoming Green Conscious and with industrialized countries becoming answerable for measurable carbon reductions, it is high time that industries across sectors worldwide realize the importance of adopting benign technologies to have a stand in this competitive world.

Last week, Newsweek had released the top 500 US Green Ranking companies across various sectors. This report shows that many companies like Allergen, Johnson & Johnson, Intel, IBM, Owens Corning, etc. have taken their small steps towards sustainable chemistry and many more are in the process of adopting benign technologies. Realizing that green chemistry has the potential to enhance the economical and environmental competitiveness, Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW- 2009) was initiated aimed towards bringing sustainable future for all. IGCW welcomes all the companies to exhibit their sustainable initiatives at our workshop. For all the companies, it would be a great opportunity to bring forth their green initiatives, as more than 750 decision makers and 30 academia would be a part of this prestigious and unprecedented workshop.

IGCW-2009 would be an apt opportunity to exhibit your “Green” products and services and establish credibility of being one of the pioneers in the implementation of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. Two kind of populace would be beneficial being a part of IGCW. First, obviously those who have initiated sustainable technologies; as they would get broad exposure to the leading industries worldwide. Secondly, people who are planning to work towards green technologies. For them, this workshop would be an excellent platform to enrich their knowledge about different green chemistry technologies. People belonging to the second category would be exposed to the sustainable technologies adopted by the companies from around the world.

So are you geared up to showcase your green initiatives with us?

The term Green Chemistry had always had its place in the laboratories but to bring it to the doorsteps of leading manufacturing and chemical industries has been a tough task. Consequently, realizing that green chemistry has the potential to enhance the economical and environmental competitiveness of the chemical industry, Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW- 2009) was initiated. IGCW is the world’s largest and unparalleled workshop aimed towards bringing sustainable future for all.

IGCW-2009 is primarily designed on the basis of a 9-Eye (I) Approach; each ‘eye’ expanding the vision of participants for engaging them into emerging views of Industrial Green Chemistry (IGC) paradigms. The 9-EYE of the workshop is Ignition, Inspiration, Initiation, Identification, Invention, Innovation, Industrialization, Implementation, and Impact. The target audience of the three day workshop is green chemist professors, scientists, academicians, researchers, media personnel, CEOs, directors, entrepreneurs, etc.

All the three days will focus on their respective themes. For instance, the first day, i.e., 4th December, 2009, will target over 300 senior management members, directors, CEOs, consultants, entrepreneurs, strategic advisors, etc. to help them recognize and explore the ecological and economical footprint of IGC through Ignition, Inspiration, and Initiation. In order to ignite awareness about IGC among more than 1, 00,000 people connected to chemical industry as stake holder, stalwarts like Prof. Paul Anasthas and Dr. John Warner will share their knowledge and expertise on IGC. Prof. Paul Anasthas will give a lecture on Sustainable Innovations through Green Chemistry and Dr. John Warner would share the 12 most important principles of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. Once the audience are enlightened about the topic, Dr. Murli Sastry, Chief Scientist with Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre, will further inspire the audience by narrating the 100 years journey of sustainability at TATA Group. Consequently, to initiate the high-end corporate executives to explore the economic potential of IGC, Dr. Apurva Bhattacharya, Senior Manager- R&D, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., will present the successful case study on commercializing green chemistry and positively impacting economics and environment.

The second day of the workshop, i.e. To begin with, Dr. John Warner will present the key note on Entropy, Weak Molecular Forces: Green Chemistry and Manufacturing. Further, Dr. Kenneth Geiser, Co-Director, University of Massachusetts, Dr. Pete Myers, CEO of Environmental Health Sciences, USA, and Dr. Surendra Kulkarni, Technical Director — G.E India Technology Centre will help identify the key scale-up and commercialization challenges in implementing IGC. Prof. G D Yadav, Director-ICT, Mumbai, India; Dr. Anil Kumar, Scientist-Physical chemistry Division, NCL, Pune, India; and Dr. Rajendra Varma, Senior Scientist —Environmental Protection Agency, USA will talk about ways to invent core strategies to stay ahead of emerging global regulations on environment issues. Prof. Yadav will deliver a lecture on Innovations in catalysis as a tool for greener chemical products, Dr. Anil Kumar will talk on Water as a Powerful solvent for accelerating reactions, and Dr. Varma will provide a lecture on Organics and Nanomaterials and their Greener Applications of Nano- Catalyst. Lastly, Dr. Mark Dorfman, Green Chemistry Neutralist-Biomimicry Guild , USA; Dr. K V Raghavan, Director – Central Leather Research Institute, India; Dr. Pierre Woehl, Research Associate, Reactor Technologies – Corning Incorporated, USA will talk about the ways to innovate business growth model by including IGC as key strategy for sustainable future.

The final day, i.e., 6th December, 2009, will encompass specific requirements of industries for implementing IGC and thus elucidate ecological and economical impact concerning the process, production, project, operation managers, vice-presidents, etc. The theme for the last day would be Implementation, Industrialisation, and Impact. After the keynote address by Dr. Dr. Amy Cannon on Green Chemistry: From classroom to manufacturing, Dr. Joe Armstrong, Dr. Shailendra Singh, and Dr. Gottumukkala V Subbaraju will elaborate on ways to implement IGC to achieve triple bottom line of Planet, People, and Profit. Further, Dr. R.K.

The word ‘Enviropreneurs’ itself represents Environment and the Entrepreneurs. Enviropreneurs are businessmen, researchers, scientists, chemists or chemical engineers and may be all of us. Keeping in mind that Environment is an asset and not a problem to us, we must try to bring sustainable solutions, but, the question arises how this can be achieved? To answer this question a team of technocrats from IIT Bombay passionate about nature did a research and concluded that if you want to minimize the waste of your plant or want to ensure clean & green environment we must measure the E-Factor (Environmental Impact Factor) . The E-factor is the measure of the amount of a waste generated while making a product. The simple ratio is units of waste divided by units of product tells us that the lower the E-factor, the less waste is produced. Preventing the waste clearly shows the first principle of Green Chemistry i.e. Design chemical syntheses to prevent waste, leaving no waste to treat or clean up.

The stages by which E-Factor can be reduced are as follows:
- The Diazotization – Hydrolysis
- Nitration
- Chlorination
- Reduction

Seeing this case study you can realise that principles of green chemistry direct us to reduce waste rather than dealing with it afterwards. The best scenario is one in which no waste is produced. If all materials that go into the system are used in the final product or they are recycled, then the E-factor produced will be less. So the best way to improve the E-factor is to recycle some of the materials that go in to the process. Go and measure E-Factor of your plant, or if you already measuring it, let us know how E-Factor is playing a key role in your industry.

The Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW-2009) is the first milestone by Green ChemisTree foundation in expressing commitment to address industrial needs. It is the first ever workshop to be held in 4th, 5th & 6th of December 2009. Its an initiative to address industrial needs for creating a momentum in implementing Green Chemistry and Engineering Technologies at industrial scale and allow altering realities on the ground. This workshop is particularly designed to take green chemistry from the cauldrons of the laboratory to the corridors of industry.
IGCW-2009 is principally designed on the basis of a 9-Eye (I) Approach; each ‘eye’ of IGCW-2009 will expand the vision of participants for engaging them into emerging views of Industrial Green Chemistry paradigms. It will also create tangible and intangible benefits for all stakeholders.

The following is an excellent presentation by Newreka Green Synth Technologies showing how Green Chemistry plays a vital role in reducing the E-Factor of the pharmaceutical industry. The main focus of the E-Factor is to measure the amount of a waste generated while making a product. So if we start using the techniques as provided by Newreka in this case study it is sure that the pharmaceutical industries can reduce their E-Factor which would further lead to sustainable use of resources.

Seeing this case study you can realize that it’s the right time to start exploring “Green Chemistry” based processes. It will ensure that the next generation drugs are manufactured through Green Processes. Hence most of the pharmaceutical majors can deploy green-chemistry strategies to improve the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. So, please help us to know how Green Chemistry is playing a role in your pharma industry.
