Namaste,

We are delighted to welcome you and inspired by your commitment, that’s present here today – commitment to explore the value proposition of Green Chemistry for your organization, to recognize the potential of Green Chemistry to offer the twin benefits of economic competitiveness & environmental preservation, and to initiate the process of implementation of Green Chemistry within your organization.

We pledge to serve this commitment of yours and welcome that spirit which is open and willing to explore the industrialization of green chemistry and engineering practices. The collective commitment of all of you, present here, is like the nucleus which will forward this field and drive the implementation and industrialization of green chemistry and engineering in the Industry.

Purpose & Commitment of IGCW: The Industrial Green Chemistry World (IGCW) is a platform created to facilitate implementation and commercialization of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering based products and technologies in the chemical industry.

IGCW2011 is an ecosystem to connect various worlds of the chemistry community – industry, academia, research institutes, government & regulatory bodies, associations, NGOs, students and media. An ecosystem to bring all these stakeholders together and to collectively explore new concepts, engage-in conversations, exchange ideas and collaborate to accelerate the industrialization of green chemistry and engineering, in a way, that it becomes the only way of doing chemistry.

Dimensions of IGCW & its reality: We take this opportunity to share with you some realities about various dimensions of IGCW:

IGCW-Symposium brings together 23 global experts from industry, academia, government bodies and NGOs, presenting on strategic issues, industrial case-studies, innovations and emerging trends. IGCW-Symposium is host to 300+ chemical companies of diverse scales, from over 3 continents and 10 Countries. It will be attended by over 1200 chief representatives from the functional domains of management, R&D, plant & operations, over three days.

IGCW-Expo is the world’s first showcase exclusively of green chemistry and engineering based initiatives, technologies, services, products and solutions. Over 50 organizations will showcase their innovations to over 4000+ visitors from the Chemical Industry at IGCW-Expo.

IGCW Awards is an acknowledgement of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions through implementation & commercialization of Green Chemistry and engineering. We are delighted to declare that IGCW-2011 has received 41 case studies for IGCW Awards, compared to 21 case-studies received in 2009. This is an indicator not only of the recognition of the unsustainability of the present course of manufacturing, but also that there are an increasing number of committed stakeholders pro-actively engaged in addressing the sustainability needs of the chemical industry.

180° Seminar Series are 3 hr technical sessions organized to create deeper technical understanding of the delegates on specific areas like Green Solvents, Green Catalysts, Green Engineering, Green Processes, etc.

Students Conference & Teachers Workshop being conducted after IGCW is an expression to expand awareness about Green Chemistry in the academia inside of our commitment to have our future generation of chemists & chemical engineers “Green Conscious”.

Opportunities at IGCW: IGCW is a phenomenal opportunity for all of us to “intervene” in to our current practices, the way we do our chemistry and to question our existing paradigms to address chemical industry’s environmental challenges. It’s an opportunity to create new paradigms – by shifting, from resource-intensive approach to profit-centric model, from regulation-driven pollution-control practices to e-factor driven pollution prevention strategies, and from effluent treatment to recycle streams at the source.

IGCW is a platform to connect the providers of these possibilities to its industry-driven seekers. It is a collective opportunity to create a next generation DNA for the chemical industry that will drive the implementation and industrialization of green chemistry and engineering.

Participation at IGCW: With this we invite you to participate in IGCW-2011 and to view this event as an opportunity, to make the most of the presence of global experts by interacting with them and exchanging ideas. Network, visit the exhibition and participate in specific 180o Seminar of your interest.

Open up this opportunity to people in your network, personally invite them to visit the exhibition halls, to explore the subject specific seminars and utilize this platform for generating a ‘green’ consciousness amongst our Industry peers and colleagues.

We invite you to participate from the receiving and sharing context, by extending your interactions with the young generation and senior alike, and take tremendous value from the event, both from the known and unknown. An event with such a grand purpose gives us an opportunity to create relationships which are grounded in purpose, and may transform brief interactions into long-term relationships to fulfill mutual commitments in this direction that will ultimately, I dare say, benefit all of humanity and, once and for all, demonstrate that Green Chemistry can improve competitiveness and profitability.

For, IGCW Team,
Nitesh

This post is not a rant. It’s a sharing of the experience we are going through. Hence, we request you to take out some time and read it thoroughly.

We have realized that we have been so busy, taking care of our day-to-day responsibilities & accountabilities, that we have started ignoring the state our community, society and our country is in.

We have started believing that we already have our hands full with things we have to handle in our personal life and have no time to think about the issues that plague our country, like corruption, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, etc.

These issues affect us in our day-to-day life, especially when we deal with the local municipal corporation, government bodies, regulatory bodies, local politicians or various institutions (including schools & colleges). Almost everywhere where we want to get something done, things rarely happen without an ‘under the table’ payment. But just because we feel that we don’t have the time to fight against the system and the corrupt culture, we choose to pay the bribe and get our job done. And that is how we contribute to that corrupt culture and feed it, due to which it continues to grow.

The corruption is so bad that it has reached a level where even if our dealings, payments, records & documentations are authentic & in integrity, we need to pay some fixed amount to ensure that we aren’t dragged into some unnecessary trouble. It has always been a frustrating experience for me whenever I have received a call from a team member asking for permission to pay a bribe to a government official to get a job done. But after a while, I forget about it and move on with the belief that “One has to be practical in a business”. Besides the frustration, it’s been costing us money too, a substantial amount at that. But as a business organization, we have included that as an additional overhead and have got used to living in this corrupt environment.

The courageous & bold initiatives of Shri Anna Hazare have triggered us to think that:

…we have to spend more years in the country than he has to (he is already 74 years old). Hence, he is actually fighting for us.

…our generation and our children could live in a “Corruption Free India”.

…we could live with the feeling that our country’s political & bureaucratic system has strong value systems.

…we could respect and honour the various institutions in our country.

…we could live in a society which is based on honesty, integrity, fairness and selflessness.

…we could be free from the frustrating experience of paying bribes to get the smallest job done.

…we and our children could be Proud of our Country!

As an expression of our commitment towards this cause of a “Corruption Free India”, we at Newreka, have chosen to contribute two days of work of all our team members. This is not a holiday, but a paid-off, where Newreka is freeing its team from all day-to-day responsibilities so that they can dedicate the time (which other-wise would have been dedicated to serve the organization) to connect with our country and think about the country’s needs.

A 74yr old man is selflessly fighting for a huge and a deserving cause. He is willing to stretch himself (physically & emotionally) and completely devote himself (body, mind & soul) for the noble purpose of a Corruption Free India. He has ignited a fire, to which if all of us contribute, can take the shape of a revolution and can cause a completely new reality for our country. We invite you to partner with Shri Anna Hazare through whatever means you choose.

We invite you to take this opportunity to think about our country for two days. Dedicate yourself and contribute to creating a county we would be proud of!

We invite you to come forward and make a difference for the country that has given you the life that you have now. If the critical mass of this country, people like you and me, won’t do anything, who will?

We invite you to get in touch with 100 people from your network (family members, relatives, friends and colleagues), and ignite & inspire them to contribute to this cause in whatever way they choose to.

For years we have been hearing that the world will end soon, especially in this age, when pollution and wastage really rule. But why believe in such rumors when we can work together to make a brighter tomorrow!

Green Chemistry & Engineering is a progressive step taken to help save our planet from harmful chemicals. Slowly and steadily Green Chemistry & Engineering practices are being adopted and implemented in the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industry processes around the world. This will not only prove beneficial for the environment but also a profitable investment. Events like CPHI-China, Chemspec-Europe and the 15th Annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference are few such events that give a serious thought about the future. With the world talking green, these three events got them talking about IGCW-2011 as well!

The CphI in China alone hosts over 1600 exhibitors with over a lakh of people visiting the event. Not only did that substantially increase visibility, but was a milestone, with IGCW inviting Chinese companies to explore green chemistry, engineering business propositions and global trends. This has interested several Chinese companies that are now keen to showcase their green chemistry and engineering based technologies at the IGCW –Expo.

At Chemspec, Europe, IGCW managed to interest 15 European companies, who now want to showcase their green chemistry and engineering based technologies & services. Across the Atlantic, at the GCandE Conference at Washington DC, IGCW used one of the best and oldest platform to spread the word. There are now ongoing partnership discussions with various leading bodies including US EPA, European Fine Chemicals Group (EFCG), Chemical Industries Association (UK), Scottish Development International and Green Product Design Network.

Green Chemistry has inspired a revolution. At the GCandE Conference, keynote presentations by global leaders such as Prof. Paul Anastas, Prof. Martyn Poliakoff, Founder of Biomimicry Guild, Ms. Janine Benyus and the Nobel Laureate Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi has inspired us to surge forward with renewed vigor. The father of Green Chemistry, Paul Anastas, called for the green chemistry version of ‘man on the moon’ program. A global opportunity for worldwide initiatives to come together and forward green chemistry as a global expression. Join us in the endeavor.

Entrepreneurship was the buzz word sometime back. But have you heard of ‘Enviropreneurship’? Environmental entrepreneurs are called Enviropreneurs. Environmentalists learning the concepts of business are into enviropreneurship who “bring market principles to resolve environmental problems.” This relatively new field encourages market-based solutions for environmental problems by educating environmentalists the principles of economics and the market. Enviropreneurship is an ideal model to help accelerate the implementation of Green Chemistry in everyday living.
Enviropreneurship is a new word for many. But for Newreka, it is the basis of their work and philosophy. Newreka helps create a system that encourages chemists and chemical engineers to develop into Enviropreneurs and deliver practices of Green Chemistry through powerful partnership with customers and all stakeholders in the chemical industry.
To elaborate the whole idea of Enviropreneurship, Mr. Nitesh Mehta from Newreka will present a paper at the 14th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference, which will be held at the The Capital Hilton, Washington, DC from June 21 to 23. Mr. Nitesh Mehta, who holds a masters degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT-B Mumbai, is an expert on Technology Implementation at the plant level. He will be presenting his thoughts and findings on the topic: “Green chemistry and engineering can offer a whole playground for entrepreneurs”.

Finally, the historic Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop – 2009 concluded with a huge success. At a time, when the entire world is keenly watching on the Copenhagen summit, expecting a greener and brighter future, IGCW was truly India’s contribution towards a sustainable future.

Today when the chemical world is facing the challenge of addressing the E-factor (kgs waste generated / kg production), innovative and sustainable concepts of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering should be the new paradigms to address these emerging challenges. Thus, it is imperative that various stakeholders of the Chemical Industry came together to make this event a huge success. The event witnessed the presence of the who’s who of the chemical industry, viz, Prof. Paul Anastas, Dr. John Warner, Dr. Rajendra Varma, so on and so forth…

The workshop which was based on the 9 Eye approach, took the audience right from understanding the concept of Green chemistry from the horse’s mouth, viz, Prof. Paul Anastas to citing examples of companies, such as Tata Chemicals, who has built India’s the most efficient Urea Plant in Babrala. Also, various intricate technical details about chemical compositions also where talked about in the event, such as, Dr. Murli Shastry’s lecture on the biological synthesis of nano-oxides, Dr.Myers lecture on obstructed bladder syndrome, etc. The event also was an opportunity for the participants to ask and understand anything and everything about Industrial Green Chemistry from the experts. It was also a prestigious platform where the contributors towards sustainability received their due recognition in the form of awards and exhibition. Companies, such as, Catapharma, PI Industries Ltd. , etc. were awarded for their benign initiatives. Even students initiatives were awarded.

However, truly a global event, I hope that this event become an inspiration for everyone to adopt benign ways and protect our planet from the ghastly disaster of global warming. If you have missed to be a part of this event, then you can check out the web telecast here at http://www.industrialgreenchem.com/index.html

Also, this is just a beginning, so if you have missed the opportunity to be at IGCW this time, then prepare yourself to be with us in the year 2011. Let us together share our sustainable contribution with the world!
